Titus is an “unsung hero”. He has been with Paul from time to time ever since the meeting in Jerusalem that Paul and Barnabas attended early in Paul’s mission work (Galatians 2:1). Titus was mentioned by name eight times in Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. In fact, Paul said Titus was his special helper concerning the church at Corinth (II Corinthians 8:23). Though Timothy most often comes to mind when we think of Paul’s students, Titus was always around! He accomplished as much for the Church as any of Paul’s helpers.
After Paul’s release from Rome and his subsequent visit to Spain, Paul came back to Asia and Macedonia. He also visited the island of Crete. Titus went with him. He left Titus at Crete to help secure the congregations there and appoint elders (Titus 1:5). Paul wanted to make sure that the congregations of the Lord’s Church were grounded and organized according to God’s plan.
After Paul gave basic instructions and encouragement to Titus, he told him of his immediate plans (Titus 3:12). Paul intended to send Artemas or Tychicus to Crete and relieve Titus. When they got there he wanted Titus to leave Crete and join him at Niopolis, a coastal city in Achai located Northwest of Corinth. Titus would have known that area well. Paul intended to spend the winter there. Unfortunately something dreadful happened!
